Interim Express FC coach Kaddu Badru Mukasa has shared insights into the biggest challenge he faces as a coach — teaching players to express themselves on the pitch.
“The biggest challenge we have as coaches is teaching players. Our players need to express themselves because football is a sport of entertainment, and people or fans have to enjoy it. That is why they pay to come to stadiums," Mukasa explained.
He emphasized the importance of allowing players to play with passion and creativity, stating, "The first thing I tell my players is to express themselves. It’s just a game — play and entertain. It’s passion, beauty, then winning will come automatically. With this, we can reach there.”
Since taking over as interim coach, Mukasa has guided Express FC to a period of stability and improved form. Their most recent result, a 1-0 away victory over his former club KCCA FC in the Kampala derby, saw Express FC rise to fourth place on the Uganda Premier League table.
The Red Eagles now have 19 points from 11 games, the same as KCCA FC who are in third place but ahead on goal difference. Express FC had experienced a shaky start to the season under former head coach Baker Mbowa but have since found consistency under Mukasa's guidance.
The coach's philosophy of encouraging players to express themselves appears to be paying off, as the team builds momentum in pursuit of a strong league finish.
