After suffering their third straight defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns so far this season, head coach Nasreddine Nabi has blamed the latest setback to bad luck insisting his players deserved to get something from the game.
Sundowns edged out Chiefs 1-0 in a tightly contested Betway Premiership clash thanks to a stunning first-half strike from Lucas Ribeiro Costa. The Brazilians’ dominance in possession and clinical finishing proved the difference against a resilient Amakhosi side at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
The latest win came after Sundowns had beaten Chiefs 2-1 in the Carling Knockout quarter-finals clash and 4-1 in the league's first round fixture. According to the Tunisian coach, he was frustrated not to have picked anything from the game, considering how his players played.
“First of all congrats to Sundowns for the three points, I feel frustrated for my players, for the fans, for everyone supporting Kaizer Chiefs today,” said Nabi as quoted by idiskitimes. “We feel we had a strong performance that could have given us something better than what we go, but that is football and we have to accept it.
“If you compare the three game we played, the first game if it wasn’t for referee mistakes we don’t lose, the second for the cup it was a completly off day for us, we were outclassed in every way.
“We feel it was bad luck to lose, after the performance, but we have to put the three games in context, it’s a team that hasn’t won a cup in ten years and a team who has won seven league titles in a row and top of African football and the other team in the process of building itself.”
Nabi concluded: “I feel the players feel the prestige of the name, even if you look at the log, there’s a big difference but on the field you couldn’t tell today the difference in terms of points in the league, it was not reflected on the field, we’re on a good way for better outcomes in the future.”
The win pushed Sundowns to 54 points from 20 matches, helping them to cement their lead at the top of the 16-team league table while Chiefs remained eighth with 25 points from 19 outings.
