Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has called on his players to step up their game following a shocking 1-0 defeat against Cape Town City FC in their first Betway Premiership match of 2025 at the DHL Stadium on Sunday.
Darwin Gonzalez took advantage of a rare breakaway to score the game’s only goal in the 51st minute, while Chiefs created numerous half-chances throughout the game but couldn’t make any of them count.
“We (Chiefs) feel that we made the same mistakes, especially in the first-half. We were unlucky not to take the right decisions in the final third, going into the opponent goal,” Nabi told SuperSport TV after the game as quoted by Head Topics.
“Unfortunately the opponent got a counter-attack and we were not able to come back from that. I feel the decision-making in the last third we had a lack…sometimes we played too many touches, sometimes we played too early, that’s how it was today and we feel we didn’t deserve to win, (but) we didn’t deserve to lose the three points but we have to back, work and try to improve.
“We had to wait for an individual except Shabalala, everyone needs to step up, if a player does not feel good, everyone needs to lift the team, contribute to the improvement of the team.”
The defeat left Amakhosi sitting seventh on the league table with 15 points from 11 matches. They have managed four wins, three draws and four defeats.
Chiefs are now 15 points behind table leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have 30 points from 11 matches and will next face Stellenbosch FC at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday, January 8th.
