African football icon Kalusha Bwalya has withdrawn from the Football Association of Zambia's (FAZ) presidential election race ahead of the March 29 polls.
The former CAF Footballer of the Year has confirmed his change of heart, saying he arrived at the decision ‘after much reflection.
“Our initial intention to run was inspired by a vision to address the challenges facing Zambian football—issues that have hindered our progress and success. We engaged with global partners eager to invest in our football, yet they, like many Zambians, have become disheartened by a system that has strayed from its purpose,” he said.
The former FAZ president has since urged election electorates to vote for candidates who have the interests of Zambia football at heart.
“To the football community and our passionate fans, I urge you to demand a leadership that embodies the spirit of our game. Football is about unity, joy, and the love of our country,” he added.
Bwalya’s exit leaves the presidential race among former FAZ general secretary Adrian Kashala and incumbent Andrew Kamanga who is gunning for a third term of office. Kamanga ousted Bwalya from the presidency in 2016.
