Kenya is scrambling to meet a December 31 deadline set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to finalize preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which the country will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania in February.
Key stadiums and infrastructure including the Moi International Sports Centre (MISC) Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium are still under construction or renovation with CAF inspectors raising red flags about their readiness.
Kasarani Stadium: 71% complete
At MISC Kasarani, significant work remains. The stadium canopy and sound system are only 40% and 10% complete, respectively. Other key areas, such as the stadium lift, arena, changing rooms, and ramps, are at 60% to 80% completion. All facilities must reach 100% functionality within the next 28 days to meet CAF standards.
Nyayo National Stadium faces delays
Nyayo National Stadium is also racing against time. Floodlight installation is ongoing, while pitch moisture levels need urgent adjustments. Renovations initially scheduled for completion in November have now been pushed to December, leaving little margin for error.
Training grounds lagging behind
Training venues including Police Sacco Stadium, MISC Annex, and Ulinzi Sports Complex require upgrades. Police Sacco and MISC Annex need new changing rooms while Ulinzi’s pitch must be upgraded to comply with CAF specifications.
Administrative challenges
Unlike Uganda and Tanzania which have already formed their Local Organizing Committees (LOCs) and secured CAF-approved venues, Kenya is yet to establish its LOC. Reports suggest the delay is due to structural adjustments within the committee. This delay jeopardizes Kenya's ability to contribute effectively to the tournament’s overarching steering committee.
High stakes for Kenya
While Uganda and Tanzania have progressed in meeting their hosting requirements, Kenya faces mounting pressure to deliver on time. CAF inspectors’ concerns, combined with a ticking clock, underscore the challenges the country must overcome to co-host CHAN 2024 successfully.
As the deadline approaches all eyes are on Kenya to rise to the occasion and ensure its facilities meet international standards.
