Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister designate, Honourable Kofi Adams, has promised to improve the technical and financial aspect of the nation’s football if approved as substantive.
Coaching has been a challenge in the domestic league, culminating in the poor performances of clubs in continental club competitions. An assemblage of home based players failed to qualify for the 2024 Championship for Africa Nations in Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya following a two leg loss to Nigeria.
The local players have equally struggled to break into the senior national team, the Black Stars much to the surprise of football aficionados.
The Member of Parliament for Buem constituency made the assertions during his vetting in Accra on Thursday, January 30 in Accra.
“We have talked about a number of things that confront our Premier League, it includes even the technical staff and that’s part of the reason why we said we will modernize and raise the Winneba Sports College into a University where training of professionals will be quite high so that we can a lot technical persons that can handle our clubs,” Adams said.
“We talked about giving them allowances so we can retain a number of our players. Some of them leave the shores of this country to play in war torn countries just because their earnings are so low.
“So the whole idea is to retain players by giving them some stipends will go a long way to help improve our leagues,” Adams added.
Honourable Kofi Adams is expected to be approved and sworn into office in the coming days by the President of Ghana, His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama.
