Sixteen matches were completed in the third round of the Libyan Premier League this week with 35 clubs competing in the top tier this season. Three clubs will qualify from each of the four groups for a place in the championship stage and it is top clubs Al Akhdar and Al Ahli Tripoli who are quickly establishing themselves as favorites to advance.

Akhdar, led by Angolan forward and the league's leading scorer last season Ary Papel, made it three wins from three matches with Tuesday's 2-1 victory at Wefaq Ajdabiya. It was a dramatic comeback from the visitors who found both of their goals in second half stoppage time to overcome a first half opener from Al Wefaq.

For Al Ahli Tripoli, Libya's big spending club continued their dominance as well without any issues at Al Ittihad Misurata. Angolan striker Mabululu, Ahli's big money signing for a reported fee of almost €1.5 million, converted a penalty kick in the second half and former Espérance winger Hamdou Elhouni confirmed the victory in stoppage time. Ahli have won all three of their matches with ten goals scored and zero goals conceded.

Regarding the other traditional top clubs in Libyan football, Uganda national team striker Muhammad Shaban scored his first goal for Al-Hilal Benghazi since joining from KCCA FC in a 3-0 victory for Hilal against Al Branes.

Reigning champions Al Nasr also won, conceding early before two goals from Libya national team midfielder Mohamed Al-Tubal sparked a 3-1 victory against Al-Anwar. Asswehly are another club to watch this season and a late goal gave them a 1-0 victory at Al-Ittihad Tripoli. Meanwhile, Al Ahly Benghazi could only manage a 1-1 draw at Al-Sadaqa.
