The Libyan Premier League is in the midst of the second round of matches for its 2024-25 season and Al Ahli Tripoli, previous champions of the 2022-23 season, appear set to make a serious push for supremacy.
Most notable among the African national team players signed by Ahli is Mabululu who arrived for a reported seven digit fee after three prolific seasons with Egypt's Al-Ittihad Alexandria. The Angola national team striker scored twice in Thursday's 5-0 domination of Asaria with two first half goals in quick succession.
Another big signing, former Wydad AC winger Muaid Ellafi, added a goal as well as Libya national team left back Mohamed El-Munir. It has been a great week for Mabululu who also scored twice in Ahli's victory over Al Malaab El Libby to open the season before winning Goal of the Year at the 2024 CAF Awards. Mabululu was joined by fellow signings Ellafi, former Espérance Tunis midfielder Ghailene Chaalali and Sudanese national team members Al-Gozoli Nooh and Bakhit Khamis.
Mabululu will have strong competition for top scorer in Libya's top division including from his countryman Ary Papel, who continues to revitalize his career with Al Akhdar. Last season's leading scorer converted from the penalty spot in Akhdar's 2-1 victory over Al-Suqoor on Tuesday.
Also among the winners this week was Asswehly who defeated Abu Salem, participants in the group stage of the 2023-24 CAF Confederation Cup, by a 3-1 score on Tuesday. Libya national team forward Omar Al Khouja scored twice after former former New York City FC winger Ismail Tajouri-Shradi opened the scoring.
There are 35 teams in the Libyan Premier League this season divided into four groups based on region. The top three finishers from each group will qualify for a championship stage to determine the league champion.
