Azam FC head coach Rachid Taoussi has revealed his desire to help the team compete for the Mainland Premier League title.

On Wednesday, the Ice Cream Makers played a build up match against Mtibwa Sugar at the Manungu Stadium in Morogoro region, which they lost 1-0 as the two teams prepared for the resumption of the Premier League in February.

Despite the outcome, the Moroccan gaffer remained confident that the friendly had given him the right test to gauge his players and their preparedness towards the league resumption.

“Our game against Mtibwa Sugar was the right test at the right time. Losing doesn’t mean we weren’t better. We faced a team that executed their tactics well, and I’m happy because it challenged us,” said Taoussi as quoted by the Guardian.

“This was just one game, but it has shown us what we need to improve. Our goal is to compete strongly for the championship, and I am confident we are moving in the right direction."

He continued: “The loss has given us the right time to return to the training ground and correct the mistakes that led to us being punished. Everyone could see the gaps, and we’re committed to improving. We will continue to recover and prepare for another friendly match before resuming league action.”

He admitted Azam had played against a good side by saying: “We played against a good team that provided the perfect measure to assess our readiness for the challenges ahead. Matches like these are essential as they push us to grow and adapt.”

In the current league standings, Azam are sitting third with 36 points from 16, four fewer than leaders Simba SC and three less second-placed and defending champions Young Africans (Yanga SC).
