Simba SC head coach Fadlu Davids has rued Steven Mukwala’s missed opportunity in the closing stages of their Mainland Premier League fixture against Fountain Gate on Thursday.
In the fixture at Kwaraa Stadium, the Wekundu wa Mzimbazi failed to reclaim their status at the top of the Ligi Kuu Bara table, leaving their rivals Young Africans (Yanga SC) as the new leaders, following a 1-1 draw.
A second half goal from in-form Simba striker Leonel Ateba put the visitors ahead close to the hour mark. However, an own goal from Simba young talent Ladaki Chasambi saw the visitors drop points in an embarrassing fashion.
Simba then had a great opportunity to win the game at the death when the Ugandan striker Mukwala was set free on goal with only the net to beat, but he squandered the opportunity.
“In the last chance there was confusion with the strikers, everyone wanted to score from the chance, which is normal, a good ball through the defense line and then one striker sets up and then Mukwala should’ve put it into the net but you know, if you can’t score chances like those, of course, maybe you don’t deserve to win and maybe it is not your day,” Davids told Pan-Africa Football.
“Good performance overall, unlucky moments by the young boy (Chasambi), but we have to support him like I said, to concede a goal just like this we have to support Chasambi because we can’t put all the blame in him, it was 1-0 and we were in full control, they didn’t have pose threats, but we needed that second goal to kill off the game which never arrived.”
On Chasambi’s own goal, the South African coach explained: “The goal we conceded, he is a young player, he is a big talent in Tanzania and we have to protect him, we have to guide him through this lessons, you learn the hard way through football, throughout your career as you grown up and you know he has to learn from such mistakes.
“We will protect him, we will guide him and help him to fulfil his potential because he is a top player.”
Simba dropped to second on the log with 44 points, one less than Yanga.
