Kagera Sugar head coach Melis Medo has called on his players to reduce their defensive mistakes if they are to keep their status in the Mainland Premier League for the new season.

The Sugar Millers suffered a 4-0 defeat against champions Young Africans (Yanga SC) in their first league match of the second round on Saturday to remain sitted second from the bottom in the league table, six points away from safety.

Speaking after the game, Medo blamed the first two goals on mistakes from his own players and further hit out at poor officiating saying the penalties awarded against them were not supposed to be given.

“Two unnecessary penalties. I don’t want to talk too much because if I do, I might say the wrong things. But congratulations to Young Africans,” said Medo as quoted by the Guardian.

“The first goal - we shouldn't have conceded that. Everything was going according to plan until that moment. These are the mistakes I was talking about earlier. That goal changed the game.”

He added: “Unfortunately, we didn’t come out on top, but every match is an opportunity to learn. One of the key lessons we have taken away is the importance of capitalising on goal-scoring opportunities. When you have the chance to score, you must make it count.”

Kagera will now shift their focus to another crucial fixture, a tough away match against fourth-placed Singida Black Stars on Friday.
