Simba SC are maintaining the pace necessary to overtake rivals Young Africans at the top of the Tanzania Mainland Premier League after recording a 3-0 victory at Namungo on Wednesday.
After holding the favorites through the first half hour, a red card issued to the hosts allowed Simba to gain an advantage just before halftime. Derrick Mukombozi got himself into trouble with his vehement protests and was sent off in a contentious moment between Namungo players and the referee.
Simba finally got their breakthrough fifteen minutes later. After right back Shomari Kapombe was dragged down in the penalty area in first half stoppage time, a spot kick was awarded and Jean Charles Ahoua dispatched his effort with ease.
Namungo managed to keep the match close in the second half but it was always going to be difficult to find an equalizer and tired legs gave way to Simba finishing their hosts off.
Ahoua added his second goal in the 72nd minute and Ugandan hitman Steven Mukwala finished the job in stoppage time to complete a convincing victory. Simba are two points back of Young Africans but still have one match to make up giving them the advantage.
In the earlier matches, third placed Azam FC were held to a scoreless draw by hosts Coastal Union while Mashujaa leaped up to sixth place with a 2-0 victory over Pamba Jiji. While the top sides continue to separate themselves from the pack, the middle of the table remains congested and as many as ten clubs could find themselves in a tight relegation battle.
