Simba SC head coach Fadlu Davids believes his charges gave away two easy goals to Azam FC in their 2-2 Mainland Premier League draw at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Monday.

In a pulsating derby which meant a lot for Wekundu wa Msimbazi in their pursuit to wrestle the title from Young Africans (Yanga SC), it was the Ice Cream Makers, who took a deserved lead with only two minutes played courtesy of Gibril Sillah.

However, Congolese import Elie Mpanzu levelled matters for Simba in the 26th minute for a 1-1 draw at the half-time break. Simba went ahead for the first time when Abdulrazack Hamza scored in the 77th minute but there was late drama as Feisal Salum set up Zidane Sereri in the 89th minute to snatch a draw for Azam and dent Simba’s title hopes.

“Now it was a good game from outside but we let ourselves down by giving them a goal in the first few minutes and then we were on the back foot but then showed some character, we were completely in control and scored the equaliser,” Davids told Pan-Africa Football.

“In the second half, the game became a little bit to transitional, we lost our control a little bit but way through the second half, we took control again, we managed to score the goal by keeping applying pressure, getting corner kicks, and then of course, lack of concentration allowed them to level matters. We have to learn from such mistakes and the result makes the derby more bigger game.”

On whether Che Malone injury affected his game plan, the South African coach said: “Yes of course, his injury was an expected, I am not sure what the problem was yet, we will have to check from the medical team, but it is a knee at the moment, so hopefully it is not too bad, but we will have access him after we do the scans in the next few days.”

He concluded; “We had the opportunity to get three points but it never happened, but all in all I am satisfied with the performance of my players, despite the fact that we gave them two goals, and even when we scored the second we were in control but if you give away spaces, they had to take advantage of my team not defending well.”

The draw left Simba four points behind table leaders Yanga, who have amassed 55 points from 21 matches.
