Following Simba's surprise draw on Thursday, fourth place Singida Black Stars had a rare opportunity to gain ground on one of Tanzania's big clubs Friday. However the big spenders could only manage a 2-2 draw at home against Ligi Kuu Bara relegation candidates Kagera Sugar.
The headline match on Friday from Tanzania's top flight featured a duel between a club with the capability to spend big on talent from throughout Africa and a side limited to domestic players and low priced regional players. A positive start for hosts Black Stars saw a former Ghana Black Star, striker Jonathan Sowah, score his first goal of the season inside ten minutes.
However the resistance grew from visitors Kagera who equalized in the 22nd minute. Salehe Kambenga arrived to tap in a free kick that snuck through the Black Stars penalty area and Halifa Nolo gave his team the lead close to the hour mark. Another high priced import for Singida, Togo national team playmaker Marouf Tchakei, salvaged a point a penalty kick to equalize a few minutes later.
For Kagera, second from last on the table, it was only their third point earned in nine matches played away from home. Meanwhile in the other match played at the same time on Friday, Coastal Union moved into sixth place with a 2-1 victory over JKT Tanzania in Tanga. Bakari Msimu opened the scoring in the first half and Maabad Maulid produced the match winner in the second half.
