A strong first half propelled Young Africans to their latest victory on Monday in Tanzania's Ligi Kuu Bara, a 2-1 result over fellow top-5 side Singida Black Stars.
Black Stars, who continue to gain attention for their ambition and recent big spending, have yet to really challenge the traditional two giants of Tanzanian football and that trend continued on Monday. Yanga's opener in the 13th minute arrived following a chaotic battle in the Singida penalty area before Clement Mzize won the ball and fired in a low finish.
When challenging the league leaders like Yanga, a club must not concede avoidable goals and Singida failed to achieve this objective. After being outworked for the first goal by Mzize, awful marking was the culprit close to halftime when Prince Dube was wide open to head in a corner kick service from Maxi Nzengeli from five yards out.
Singida finally began to show signs of life after halftime but it was too little too late. Ghanaian striker Jonathan Sowah pulled a goal back in second half stoppage time to spoil Yanga's clean sheet but the defending champions did enough to extend their league lead to five points over Simba. However, the Reds have played two less matches than Yanga and can overtake their rivals.
In the other match on Monday played simultaneously, Tabora United and Fountain Gate played to a scoreless draw, leaving fifth placed Tabora four points back of Singida Black Stars.
