Nations FC defender Razak Simpson has expressed confidence that local players can compete for positions in the Ghana senior national team if given the opportunity.

Simpson is one of the local players from the Ghana Premier League to have earned a call up during the Black Stars failed 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign where they failed to book a slot for the finals in Morocco.

Simpson believes that local players can battle the foreign based players for slots in the Black Stars squad, contrary to widespread claims of a lack of quality in the domestic league.

“We, the local players, can compete if given the chance, we can deliver. Once you enter the Black Stars camp, it’s a great experience. They treat us well, and it’s completely false that foreign-based players disrespect us. Even the coaches respect us,” he told 3Sports.

Simpson recently earned his first Black Stars call-up for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Angola and Niger after an impressive run in the Ghana Premier League. He played the full ninety minutes in both matches as Ghana drew Angola 1-1 away and lost 1-2 to Niger at home.

The 26-year-old, who joined Nations FC from WAFA two seasons ago, has been a key figure in their defence and is hopeful of securing a place in Otto Addo’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup resumes in March with two games against Chad at home and Madagascar away. The four-time African champions are tied at the top of Group I on nine points with Comoros and are faced with must win situations to qualify for the global football festival that will be hosted by Mexico, Canada and USA.
