In comments made to Sky Sports, former German international Lothar Matthäus slammed Algerian left back Ramy Bensebaini who currently plays his club football for Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund. Bensebaini joined the Yellow and Black on a free transfer in 2023.
Matthäus said the 29-year-old adds zero value to the German club: “Bensebaini does not add value to Dortmund. In Gladbach, he was left out because of his mentality. He is present on the pitch but without any impact, his runs lack aggression."
Bensebaini and Dortmund are having a very disappointing season as they are 10th on the table. The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations winner scored one league goal and assisted four in the 2024/25 Bundesliga campaign as he continues to be a versatile option for Dortmund who can play as a central defender or left back.
However, Bensebaini's numbers and performances in the ongoing campaign do not impress 1990 FIFA World Cup winner Matthäus, who claims that Bensebaini is failing to live up to expectations at Dortmund after a superb four seasons at Borussia Monchengladbach.
Dortmund earlier today sacked their head coach Nuri Sahin following the club’s 11th defeat of the season at the hands of Italian outfit Bologna. Bensebaini did not play the Champions League tie as he was suspended for Tuesday's clash.
