Magesi FC defender Limbikani Mzava has said the Betway Premiership rookies’ poor league form is not due to their hangover from winning the Carling Knockout Cup in Bloemfontein, South Africa, last month.

The centre-back spoke exclusively to Pan-Africa Football on Sunday, a day after the South Africa Premier Soccer League newcomers lost 2-0 to Chippa United in Port Elizabeth. Sinoxolo Kwayiba handed the Chilli Boys the maximum points after scoring a brace.

In reaction, the former AmaZulu FC player insisted that Magesi’s league struggles have nothing to do with complacency after stunning highly fancied Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 to win the cup on November 23, 2024.

“I have heard that what we are experiencing usually happens when you win a cup, but that is not our mentality. We are the same ambitious team that gives its all in every game,” Mzava said.

The 31-year-old attributed the league’s indifferent form of the coach Clinton Larsen’s side to the effects of a tight nature of engagements to be fulfilled.

“We have not had much time to recover between assignments but that is what football can be. However, we are not underrating opponents and we will keep fighting,” he said.

The former Malawi skipper has been a stalwart for the Limpopo-based team he joined upon its promotion to the elite league this season. He was a free agent for two seasons following his exit from AmaZulu FC in June 2022.

Larsen’s team drew 2-2 against Kaizer Chiefs in the previous league match before Saturday’s game against Chippa. Magesi lie in the danger zone one point ahead of TS Galaxy and bottom-placed Richards Bay with six points from seven games recording one win, three draws, and three losses.
