Malawi’s TNM Super League champions, Silver Strikers, have elevated Peter Mgangira to the head coach position to replace his boss Peter Mponda who resigned last week.
The Lilongwe-based team has released a statement confirming the appointment of the former assistant coach Mgangira as the new man in charge.
“Silver Strikers FC is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Peter Mgangira as the new head coach, effective immediately,” the statement reads.
“A distinguished former player of Silver Strikers and a dedicated member of the coaching panel for nearly a decade, Mr. Mgangira brings unparalleled knowledge of the club’s culture and values. His extensive coaching experience, and combined with his qualifications, positions him as the ideal candidate to steer the team forward.”
Mgangira has been an understudy of many coaches at Silver, including Zambian Daniel Kabwe and Dutchman Pieter De Jongh, Mponda’s predecessor.
Mponda resigned on Thursday amid mounting speculation that he is poised for a sensational return to his former club FCB Nyasa Big Bullets where he served as a captain and then assistant coach before leaving for South Africa’s Black Leopards in 2023 only for Silver to lure him back.
The former Bullets defender presided over one of the most successful seasons at Silver, nine-time champions, losing only once in 30 games to seal the title after shrugging off competition from second-placed Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.
