Malawi’s Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili has reacted to being drawn with Congo in the 2026 CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Qualifiers.

Fazili told Pan-Africa Football that although he was unfamiliar with Congo’s style of play, the Scorchers would have no excuse for not beating them.

“Though not very familiar with Congo, all is about good planning,” he said in a brief interview.

The 2023 COSAFA Women’s Championship-winning coach added that the team’s return to the continental competition should excite his players.

He was referring to concerns from the Scorchers star players such as Temwa Chawinga who accused the football authorities of ignoring the women’s team by not registering it in the WAFCON qualifiers.

“Now there are no excuses from professional players,” Fazili said.

CAF conducted the draw in Morocco on Thursday ahead of the first-round matches between the 17th and 26th February 2025, followed by the second round between the 20th and 28th October, 2025.

The overall winner between Malawi and Congo will date either Angola or Zimbabwe in the second round. The Scorchers have never qualified for the WAFCON finals. Meanwhile, the Malawi Under-20 women's team has been drawn against the Central African Republic (CAR) in the first round of the 2026 Under-20 Women's World Cup African Qualifiers.

The winner between Malawi and CAR will take on either South Sudan or Djibouti in the second round.

The first-round qualifiers are scheduled for 9 to 11 May 2025 and the second leg between 16 and 18 May 2025.
