The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has suspended executive committee member Daud Mtanthiko after he was implicated in sexual harassment allegations. He stands accused of coercing two senior women’s national football team players to have sex with him during a recent trip to South Africa.
“FAM wishes to clarify that Mr. Mtanthiko is currently under suspension pending investigations into allegations levelled against him. As such, he is not part of the delegation in Ghana. FAM is engaging relevant authorities to address the deliberate spread of false information and is committed to promoting responsible and accountable media reporting,” FAM’s statement reads.
Media reports claim that the FAM official sent text messages and entered the hotel room of the players to demand sex. However, the players did not yield to the demands but reported the matter to the Scorchers’ coaches.
FAM announced that it was investigating the matter, but did not disclose the official’s identity until an online publication’s story suggesting that Mtanthiko was still involved in national team duties, attracted the association’s confirmation of the suspension. FAM dismissed Malawi Voice’s story suggesting that Mtanthiko had travelled with the Malawi school’s team to Ghana for a tournament.
Media reports suggest the incident happened during the Scorchers’ trip to South Africa for friendlies. The Scorchers lost 3-0 to Banyana Banyana on April 5 and 2-1 on April 8.
