Silver Strikers beat Mighty Wanderers 5-3 on post-match penalties to lift the NBS Charity Shield Cup in Lilongwe on Saturday afternoon.

Silver had come from behind to force a two-all draw in regulation time before winning in penalties.

Played in front of a packed Bingu National Stadium crowd, Wanderers were to quick to come off the block when Sama Thierry scored with a wonderful strike in the 28th minute.

However, the fortunes for the Nomads changed when the Cameroonian limped off the pitch two minutes after scoring with Clement Nyondi coming in his place.

Little wonder, Binwell Katinji equalised for Silver with a simple tap in following debutant Precious Sambani's delivery in the 55th minute.

A few minutes later, Blessings Singini did restore Wanderers lead but this only jolted the hosts into action with Zebron Kalima equalizing again for Peter Mgangira's men.

Hopes of Wanderers going in front again were dampened after their captain Lawrence Chaziya received a red card in the 77th minute for fouling Chinsisi Maonga.

That proved to be the last talking point in regulation time before the game went into post-match penalties which saw Silver convert all their attempts while the hosts keeper saved Singini's spot kick for Wanderers.

The Charity Shield curtain raises the 2025 season, with the top flight kicking off on April 5 in Malawi.
