Silver Strikers have suffered a heavy blow following coach Peter Mponda’s resignation weeks after leading the Lilongwe-based club to its first TNM Super League title in over a decade.

In a statement, Silver, the Reserve Bank of Malawi-sponsored team, confirmed the resignation of the former Flames captain despite that he had extended his contract by two years.

“Silver Strikers Limited wishes to inform its supporters, partners, and all stakeholders that the club has accepted the resignation of head coach Mr Peter Mponda, effective immediately. Mr Mponda has tendered his resignation for personal reasons, a decision we deeply respect and understand,” the statement reads.

“This development comes four months after Mr Peter Mponda signed a two-year extension to his initial contract, demonstrating his commitment and passion for the club. During his tenure, Mr Mponda’s exceptional leadership and technical expertise propelled Silver Strikers to remarkable success, culminating in the club being crowned the 2024 TNM Super League championship winners.”

Mponda’s resigned on Thursday amid mounting speculation that he is poised for a sensational return to his former club FCB Nyasa Big Bullets where he served as a captain then assistant coach before leaving for South Africa’s Black Leopards in 2023 only for Silver to lure him back.

The former Bullets defender presided over one of the most successful seasons at Silver, the nine-time champions, losing only once in 30 games to seal the title after shrugging off competition from second placed Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.

Ironically, it is Mponda who ended Bullets’ five-year dominance of the league title. The season ended earlier this month and will resume next March.
