Malawian striker Temwa Chawinga has won the Player of the Month award for March 2025 in America’s National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), a reward for a perfect start to the season with Kansas City.
“Reigning NWSL MVP and Golden Boot winner, Temwa Chawinga, picked up right where she left off last season, scoring goals in each of the Current’s three league matches in March and earning her this season’s first @easportsfc Player of the Month,” Kansas City tweeted.
It is her fourth Player of the Month Award in her growing career after three similar accolades in 2024 when she became the first player since 2014 to win it three times in a single season.
Chawinga continues from where she left off in her debut season in 2024 when she swept most individual awards, including Most Valuable Player and Golden Boot Award winner.
Now, the Scorchers player is building on her maiden campaign by winning the monthly award after an inch-perfect start to 2025, scoring three goals in three games for Kansas City.
The Malawian last scored on 29 March, 2025, in the 3-0 win over Utah Royals, marking her eighth consecutive NWSL regular-season appearance with a goal.
Chawinga will chase more goals when Kansas City face the San Diego Wave on 12 April, 2025, at Snapdragon Stadium. The 2023 Cosafa Women’s Championship top scorer netted record-setting 20 league goals and six assists after joining Kansas City from Wuhan University Women’s FC last season.
The 26-year-old also overtook the previous record of 18 goals in a single NWSL season, which Chicago Red Stars player Sam Kerr held since 2019.
The Malawian is the first player in current franchise history to earn the MVP. She finished with the overall 24 goals and eight assists across all competitions in 2024.
