After over eight seasons in European club football, Mali national team regular Mamadou Fofana is off to a new continent to continue his career. Fofana will join Major League Soccer club New England Revolution in the American top division after the Revolution and French Ligue 2 side Amiens came to an agreement on a transfer fee.

Fofana joins the Revolution for a reported transfer fee of €1.7 million according to Flavien Trésarrieu of L'Équipe. He signed a three-year contract and the Revolution will have the option to extend the contract for one more season as well. After an awful 2024 season that saw them fail to make the MLS playoffs, the club based in the state of Massachusetts near the city of Boston are rebuilding ahead of the 2025 campaign that begins in late February.

A graduate of the academy of famous Bamako club Stade Malien, Fofana first moved to Europe at the age of 18 when he completed a transfer to Turkish side Alanyaspor. After gaining his first professional experience over two seasons in Turkish football, the Bamako native spent over six seasons in France with Metz and Amiens making the majority of his appearances in Ligue 2.

Fofana is an important member of the Mali national team with over 40 appearances for Les Aigles. He was an important member of the Mali U-17 team that reached the final of the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup where Mali were defeated by Nigeria.

Fofana has been a member of three Mali squads at the Africa Cup of Nations, featuring three times at the 2019 edition and twice at the most recent 2023 edition in Ivory Coast. He started every match of Mali's successful qualification campaign for the 2025 AFCON including their two victories in November at Mozambique and at home against Eswatini.
