Mozambique coach Chiquinho Conde has dedicated the Mambas’ qualification to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals to the people of his home country which is in political unrest.
Mozambique news outlets such as Sport Jogos have quoted Conde as having made the remarks after booking the AFCON ticket following an away 2-1 win over Guinea-Bissau in a Group I encounter on Tuesday afternoon. The victory came as Mozambique is in political turmoil amid protests in the aftermath of the recent presidential elections which Daniel Chapo won.
“The victory and qualification are for all the Mozambican people. I want to highlight the effort and dedication of our players, who fought until the end to achieve this feat. This is a victory for all of us,” Conde said.
The Mozambique Football Federation (FMF) has since described the Mambas’ back-to-back AFCON qualification and the sixth overall as a story of determination.
“Our story is still being written with sweat, grit and passion! For the second time in a row, our national team guarantees its place on the biggest stage of African football: the CAN MOROCCO 2025! THE DREAM COMES TRUE!!,” FMF wrote on its Facebook page.
The Mambas bounced back from Friday’s home 1-0 loss to Mali to beat Guinea-Bissao on Tuesday courtesy of Bruno Langa and Stanley Ratifo’s goals in either half in between Beto’s face=saver for the hosts at Bissau.
Conde’s wards wound up the qualifying race with 11 points to join Mali at the AFCON finals, who have 14 points whereas Guinea-Bissau have five points and Eswatini two points.
