Mamelodi Sundowns have boosted their defense following Thursday's announcement of the loan transfer of Lucas Suárez from Argentine club Club Atlético Talleres. The versatile left-footed defender joins on a loan deal that will run through the end of 2025.
Pan-Africa Football's Hossam Ahmed previously reported on a potential deal earlier this month after speaking with Talleres president Andrés Fassi. Fassi indicated that Suárez was intrigued in a move to South Africa and that a club from South Africa was among three clubs who were interested in the former Argenting under-20 national team player:
“There are three clubs interested in Lucas! We will see what the player decides. He really likes the idea of South Africa, so we will see,” Fassi revealed exclusively to Pan-Africa Football two weeks ago.
Primarily a central defender who can also operate on the left flank, the 1.84m tall Argentine has made over 100 appearances at top level Argentine clubs including Talleres where he has been since 2022. Suárez previously impressed on loan with Talleres from Argentine second division club Estudiantes de Río Cuarto before joining the club permanently for a fee reported to be a little under €183,000.
Suárez joins another central defender Keanu Cupido, acquired on a permanent transfer from fellow Betway Premiership club Cape Town City, as defensive reinforcements ahead of the second half of the league campaign as well as the knockout stages of the CAF Champions League.
