Mamelodi Sundowns have announced the appointment of Portuguese Miguel De Azevedo Cardoso as head coach replacing Manqoba Mngqithi, the South African giants have confirmed the changes.
The Betway Premiership champions have replaced Mngqithi after going winless in their two CAF Champions’ League group stage matches.
A statement from Sundowns reads: “The introduction of the new Coaching Technical Team was necessitated by the recent unsatisfactory results despite the commitment of the Sundowns Board to give Manqoba Mngqithi and his Technical Team an opportunity to lead the Club going into the future.”
The Portuguese coach will come with his backroom staff meaning that Mngqithi has left Sundowns with only Steve Komphela and Kennedy Mweene retained.
“Mamelodi Sundowns is thankful to Manqoba Mngqithi and Wendell Robinson for their loyal services to the club over the years and wishes them everything of the best in their new endevours. Manqoba Mngqithi and Wendell Robinson will forever remain part of the Mamelodi Sundowns Family. Mamelodi Sundowns is also thankful to Romain Folz who recently joined the club,” the statement added.
The Pretoria-based side parted ways with coach Rulani Mokwenda and ushered in Mngithi. However, there were doubts about Sundowns league title retention even though they lead the table on goal aggregate over Orlando Pirates.
Sundowns drew 1-1 with AS FAR Rabat over the weekend. Miguel was most recently the head coach of Espérance Sportive de Tunis and reached the finals of the 2023/24 CAF Champions League.
