NEC FC midfielder Enock Ssebagala has expressed his determination to follow in the footsteps of his elder brother, Manko Kaweesa by representing Uganda Cranes at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.
Kaweesa, hailed as one of the best defensive midfielders of his generation, was a key figure in Uganda’s historic first CHAN appearance in 2011 in Sudan, where he captained URA FC.
Ssebagala, is currently among the standout performers in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League. His contributions of two goals and three assists in the first round have propelled NEC FC to second place on the league table with 30 points, just one shy of leaders Vipers SC.
The midfielder received his first national team call-up during the CHAN 2024 qualification doubleheader against Burundi last December but did not make an appearance. He has since been named in the 36-man provisional squad preparing for the CHAN tournament, which will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania from February 1st to 28th 2025.

“It’s a big opportunity to be called for CHAN and I thank God,” Ssebagala to this website. “To me, it’s a big achievement, and it motivates me to work even harder. Every player’s dream is to represent their nation and I thank God for this moment. I pray I get the chance to play at the final tournament and fulfill what my elder brother Manko Kaweesa did in 2011. He has motivated and inspired me a lot.”
When asked about the factors behind his national team selection, Ssebagala credited his faith, work ethic and team spirit. “God is the main reason, but also the hard work I put in has been key. Listening to coaches and focusing on teamwork have also been crucial,” he noted.
The CHAN tournament presents Ssebagala with a golden opportunity to make his mark and honor his brother’s legacy.
