After a break on Sunday, the four-team Mapinduzi Cup continued on Monday as Burkina Faso defeated hosts Zanzibar by a 1-0 score. After a draw against Kenya in their opening match the Stallions moved to the top of the table in the exhibition tournament courtesy of a second half goal from Hadalou Sagnè.
The hosts, going by the name "Zanzibar Heroes", got off to a great start by defeating the Tanzania Mainland team but could not find a goal against the Burkina Faso side composed of players based in the top division of Burkinabe football. Star player and Azam FC midfielder Feisal Salum rattled the crossbar with his free kick effort late in the first half.
Burkina Faso made their opportunity count, however, in the 71st minute. Clement Pitroipa provided an excellent pass to his AS Douanes club teammate Sagnè on the right wing and he fired in a powerful effort for the only goal of the match.
