The exhibition Mapinduzi Cup kicked off on Friday at the Gombani Stadium on the Zanzibari island of Pemba and the opening match ended in a 1-0 victory for hosts Zanzibar over a team representing the Tanzanian mainland.

Feisal Salum, the Azam FC star born in Zanzibar who features for Tanzania in FIFA and CAF competition, scored the only goal of the match representing Zanzibar. The island nation put out a strong team that also featured other players who represent FIFA-eligible Tanzania including Young Africans defensive star Ibrahim Hamad and Mashujaa FC's Ibrahim Ame.

Zanzibar took the lead early in the second half when Salum produced an accurate first-time finish from a pass by Saleh Masoud. In a match that featured few opportunities, Salum's moment of class was the difference.

Kenya and Burkina Faso will meet tomorrow for the second match of the tournament before a break from matches on Sunday. Zanzibar's next match is on Monday against Burkina Faso while the Tanzania Mainland team will clash with Kenya on Tuesday.
