The Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (FFRIM) has embarked on a plan to expand the overall capacity of the Cheikha Ould Boïdiya Stadium in the capital of Nouakchott. The stadium is serving as home to the Mauritanian national side as it hosts different continental and international matches.

World football governing body FIFA will fund the expansion project. Deputy Head of Member Associations and Regional Director of FIFA Gelson Fernandes was in Mauritania for the launch of the project together with FFRIM president Ahmed Yahya. The project is under the FIFA Forward 3.0 program.

The expansion will see an increase in the potential number of spectators from 8,000 to 16,000. FFRIM hopes to host continental games upon the completion of the stadium.
