Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has revealed the decision to settle for South African legend Benni McCarthy as the new head coach for Kenyan national team Harambee Stars.

The former Bafana striker was unveiled on Monday in Nairobi alongside his technical bench that consists of Vasili Manousakis as the assistant coach, Moeneeb Josephs as goalkeepers coach, and Pilela Maposa as Performance Analyst.

According to Mohammed, the quartet, who put pen to paper on two-year contracts, are expected to bring a fresh approach to the national team set-up as Kenya looks ahead to upcoming international fixtures.

“After a rigorous selection process, we are confident that Benni McCarthy is the right person to lead our national team forward. His experience, vision, and commitment to developing Kenyan football align perfectly with our ambitions,” explained Mohammed.

“Alongside him, we welcome Vasili Manousakis as Assistant Coach, Moeneeb Josephs as Goalkeepers Coach, and Pilela Maposa as Performance Analyst. This team brings a wealth of expertise, and we believe they will instil tactical discipline, structure, and a winning mentality as we prepare for upcoming competitions.”

McCarthy and his team will immediately take charge as Kenya prepares for the upcoming 2024 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Gambia and Gabon. Kenya will head to Gambia on March 17 before returning home to host Gabon on March 24.

Harambee Stars are currently lying fourth in Group F with five points, five less than African champions Ivory Coast, who are leading the pile with 10. Kenya kicked off their qualification campaign with a 2-1 defeat against Gabon, beat Seychelles 5-0, drew 1-1 against Burundi before a 0-0 draw against the Elephants.
