Ethiopia national team head coach Mesay Teferi stated his desire to stay at the helm beyond January 2025. The Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) gave Teferi an interim role to lead the national side in their final four qualifying matches for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Teferi succeeded Gebremedhin Haile as coach of Ethiopia in November for the AFCON and 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifying games. In November, Teferi and his charges managed to beat DR Congo for the nation's first-ever victory in Kinshasa to end AFCON qualifying on a positive note. However they also lost three games, most recently both legs against Sudan in December's CHAN qualifying matches.
Teferi's contract with the Walias has now ended. The coach earlier today stated his desire to stay at the national team. "There is a body at EFF that decides on my stay. That is the executive committee. I am happy and ready to serve if given the chance," said Teferi.
EFF is expected to decide on the fate of a new head coach before 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures against Egypt and Djibouti in March.
