Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has described his first week in charge as intense but rewarding, as he prepares his squad for their crucial CAF Champions League clash against Raja Casablanca this Sunday.

With just two points in Group B, Sundowns are looking to revive their campaign following the departure of former coach Manqoba Mngqithi.

Rebuild in no time

Looking back on those early days, Cardoso acknowledged the challenges of taking the reins of the team mid-season.

“We had to pick the team up from where it was, refine it and tweak it to build what we’re trying to put together. The first step was to take the players out of their comfort zone so that they could evolve and express their best level, individually and collectively."

Despite the little time at his disposal, the Portuguese technician showed total commitment.

“This week has been crazy. My brother sent me a message saying, “I know you don’t have time, but when you do, we’ll talk.” I leave the training center every evening at 9 p.m., often in the rain, I continue to work even during dinner, but that’s what motivates us, that’s our passion.”

A quality opponent

Cardoso is aware of the value of Raja Casablanca, particularly in a competitive Group B which also includes FAR Rabat and AS Maniema Union.

“Raja is a quality team playing in a very tough competition. We analyzed every detail that could give us an advantage. Now it’s about fine-tuning the technical aspects of the game.”

A slight advantage thanks to past experience

Having faced Sundowns in the CAF Champions League semi-final last season while managing Esperance Tunis, Cardoso believes the experience gives him a better read of the team.

“I already knew the players and I studied them further. We have a very strong group, and when one player falls, another is ready to take over. We need that fluidity and attitude during matches. The team that imposes its game is the one that wants to win. We have to be offensive and aggressive."

With an attacking mentality and fighting spirit, Sundowns hope to score a decisive victory against a strong opponent and restart their campaign in the continental competition.
