Turkish coach coach Muhsin Ertugral has confidently branded Cape Town City as among the teams that will challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the Betway Premiership title next season.

So far in the current campaign, Cape Town City are lying 12th on the 16-team league table with 21 points from 19 matches having registered six wins, drawn three and suffered 10 defeats. They are lying 27 points behind champions and leader Sundowns, who have garnered 48 points.

In their last fixture, Cape Town City suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against Orlando Pirate, an outcome that saw them go for five straight matches without registering a win.

“I can talk, but we need to find a tune which makes up a team, and I’m pretty sure if the team stays like this, next season, this team [Cape Town City] can win the league,” said Ertugral as quoted by FARPost. “I have to be careful with what I say, but they’ll definitely be in the challenge.”

On their defeat against Pirates, the Turkish gaffer said: “I think how Orlando Pirates plays, there’s a lot of variation in their abilities when the players on the bench come on; they put the bar a little bit higher,” he said.

“The pressure mounts, and that forces you to sit even more back…so Orlando Stadium is a great Stadium, and the team is good because the coaches have done a great job here. They found which players suit their system because football is also about relations, and the kind of relations on the pitch is controlled by players.”

Cape Town will return to league action with a game against TS Galaxy at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday.
