Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has blamed his players for the 2-2 Premier Soccer League (PSL) draw against Royal AM on Saturday.
In the fixture at Peter Makoba Stadium, Amakhosi squandered a two-goal lead to share the spoilsand miss out on a chance to claim third place. Chiefs made a dream start, taking the lead in just the fifth minute. Gaston Sirino, pulling the strings in midfield, found Yusuf Maart, whose precise pass set up Ashley du Preez to open the scoring.
Then in the 13th minute, teenager Wandile Duba doubled the advantage, finishing off a pinpoint assist from Dillan Solomons, who was immediately forced off with a muscle injury.
Royal AM came out stronger in the second half and pulled a goal back in the 51st minute through Ayabulela Maxwele's stunning long-range strike.
The decisive moment came in the 89th minute when Levy Mashiane capitalised on poor defending, slipping past the Chiefs' centre-backs to fire home the equaliser and secure a dramatic point for the visitors.
“We feel that today is a lack of professionalism,” he told journalists after the game as quoted by idiskitimes. “We could’ve ended the first half with five or six to nil, this game could have had seven or eight [goals].
“Sometimes you don’t score because lack of collective or ego, but when you don’t respect football, the football doesn’t respect you. We are very, very frustrated with the two points that we have lost today because we controlled the game from the first minute until the last minute – but that’s what happend when you let the opponent alive.”
Nabi further quaestioned his team’s defensive abilities by saying: “The other frustrating thing is, sometimes you can’t score, we had a lot of opportunities. But when it’s three or four minutes left, we need to defend your advantage, but even that we couldn’t do.
“It’s very hard to understand what happened today.”
