Mandela National Stadium, Namboole is undergoing a major facelift as Uganda gears up to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
One of the key upgrades is the replacement of the stadium's natural grass pitch with an advanced hybrid grass system. This cutting-edge technology integrates natural grass with synthetic fibers to create a durable, weather-resistant surface ideal for high-performance football.
During an inspection on Sunday, specialized machines were seen meticulously stitching synthetic fibers into the natural grass. The synthetic elements will comprise just 5% of the pitch, maintaining its natural feel while enhancing durability and consistency for matches under all conditions.
Other significant enhancements include the installation of accessible seating near the pitch for individuals with disabilities, ensuring inclusivity and the addition of evacuation points to prioritize fan and player safety during emergencies. These upgrades align with international standards, positioning Namboole as a world-class venue ready to host some of Africa's finest football talent during the CHAN tournament.
