Kaizer Chiefs forward Wandile Duba has revealed more on the game plan that helped his side come from a goal down and beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the semifinals of the Nedbank Cup at a packed Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday.
The Brazilians went into the half-time break leading 1-0 courtesy of a free-kick from Teboho Mokoena. However, Wandile Duba capitalized on a mistake by Suarez to put Amakhosi level before Ashley Du Preez came off the bench to score a dramatic last minute winner.
“He [Nabi] told us not to rush them [Sundowns],” said Duba during a post-match interview on SuperSport TV as quoted by FARPost. “We all know that Sundowns is good when it comes to build-up play, so the coach said we should wait for moments where we can capitalise, like my goal. He did say that their left centre-back [Suarez] makes many mistakes.
“Coach said we should make a trap and close him down in a way that will force him to make an inward pass like he did, which ultimately resulted in my goal-scoring opportunity. Yes [the coach said we should target Suarez]. Since the start of the week, he said our target is the left centre-back.
The win against Sundowns means Chiefs have reached their 20th Nedbank Cup final, they have reached their first Nedbank Cup final since 2019 while head coach Nasreddine Nabi became the first North African tactician to lead Chiefs to a Cup final.
Chiefs will face Orlando Pirates, who beat Marumo Gallants 1-0 in the other semi-final, in the final of the domestic competition at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 10 May.
