Former Zambian international striker Collins Mbesuma has backed Kaizer Chiefs to turn their faltering season around by beating rivals Mamelodi Sundowns in the second semi-final of the Nedbank Cup at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two sides this season, with the Tshwane side having dominated their previous encounters, winning all three matches. The stakes are high for Amakhosi, who are two games away from breaking their decade-long trophy drought, and have their sights firmly set on ending this barren spell.
According to Mbesuma, the upcoming match will be a massive battle between the two sides, likening it to a war situation but believes it could have a different outcome with Amakhosi turning their season around with a win.
“Every time these sides meet it’s always heated,” said Mbesuma as quoted by Chiefs official website. “A cup match is a different ball game and it will be about which team carries the day. I know Sundowns have been dominating and doing well, but I believe that anything can happen in a Cup game. Kaizer Chiefs can turn their season around with a win. They need to approach the match with a Cup game mindset and a determination to come out victorious.”
He added: “I’m confident that they have the talent to go out there and make a statement. It's time for them to step up and show what they're capable of.”
On his experience playing against Sundowns while at Chiefs, Mbesuma explained: “Playing against Sundowns was one of my exciting moments because we always wanted to prove a point. The current team must adopt a similar approach to what we had… just give it their all and leave everything on the field.”
This match will be the second Cup fixture between the two teams in the current domestic campaign following their encounter in the Carling Knock-out Cup last November.
Although Amakhosi have been struggling to find form in their recent four-match winless streak, Sunday’s clash presents an opportunity to get back to winning ways.
