Mamelodi Sundowns legend Teko Modise has explained why Kaizer Chiefs will not stand a chance to beat Mamelodi Sundowns in the second semi-final of the Nedbank Cup at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two sides this season, with the Tshwane side having dominated their previous encounters and winning all three matches. The stakes are high for Amakhosi, who are two games away from breaking their decade-long trophy drought, and have their sights firmly set on ending this barren spell.
In the first meeting this season, Sundowns won 4-0, then 2-1 and most recently 1-0 and according to Modise, he doesn’t see Amakhosi posing a major threat to his former club during the domestic competition.
“It’s a very difficult one,” Modise told iDiski Times. “Because you have Sundowns that have a CAF commitment to play against a very, very difficult side and it’s gonna be a very physical and demanding to get a positive result. And yet again you have such an important game over the weekend which maybe Chiefs can find the weaknesses and flaws to actually beat Mamelodi Sundowns over the weekend.
But yet again you have a fixture that Sundowns are coming in as favourites and you have a mix bag of results from Kaizer Chiefs which the fans are expecting a victory or which the fans are expecting some sort of consolidation or consolidation prize maybe in terms of the season they’ve had.”
Modise added: “It’s gonna be a very difficult one. I don’t think they have the personnel to upset Mamelodi Sundowns, but we’ve seen remarkable things happen in football. Just because you’re favourites doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve already won the game. I think Mamelodi Sundowns have to go out on the weekend to actually try and win the game and Kaizer Chiefs will possibly try and use the energy because they don’t have a game in midweek.
They’ll try and use as much energy as they can and just try and get as early goals as possible because knowing that Mamelodi Sundowns they will possibly be back in the country by Friday, and they don’t have enough time to actually train for that game.”
Although Amakhosi have been struggling to find form in their recent four-match winless streak, Sunday’s clash presents an opportunity to get back to winning ways.
