Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has revealed that his side is not in a hurry to win a trophy this season.
Ahead of their Nedbank Cup semi-final clash against rivals Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday, the Tunisian coach said he has three years to build a team to start winning trophies. He said this despite Chiefs going without a major trophy in South Africa for nine years.
Sunday’s fixture will be the fourth meeting between the two clubs this season, with the Tshwane side having dominated their previous encounters, winning all three matches.
Amakhosi are on the verge of ending their ten-year trophy drought, just two wins away from breaking the streak and achieving their long-awaited triumph. The fixture will also be the second cup fixture between the two teams in the current domestic campaign following their encounter in the Carling Knock-out Cup last November.
“This is our first year [at Chiefs] and we’re trying to build our team, but when we get an opportunity like this one where we’re in the semi-final and we can win the trophy, we can try to do that for the fans and board,” said Nabi as quoted FARPost.
“So, we will always play to win a trophy because we are in a big team like Kaizer Chiefs. So, every season, and every competition you play, you have to try to win. I think when we discussed with the board, we said we are in the process of two to three years to build our team, but after that, then we can play for the African Cup, league or every competition to win.
“But for now, we are in the process, as I said. But if we get an opportunity to win the trophy, we will play to win it, and if we do that, it will be amazing for us. It would give us more confidence to play for the board, fans, and team and for us coaches. If we don’t win it, we have to continue to work.”
Chiefs and Sundowns will face off for the fourth time this season, with Sundowns holding the advantage from three previous wins. Expect a high-stakes battle as Chiefs look to shift the momentum.
