Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has challenged his players to go all the way and lift the Nedbank Cup following their 3-1 win against Stellenbosch in a quarter-final fixture at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Saturday.
During the fixture, Amakhosi scored two goals in stoppage-time. The game looked headed to extra-time with the score at 1-1 when Chiefs had a corner deep into additional time and, from the resultant set-piece, it looked as if Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens had been fouled before Pule Mmodi eventually put the ball in the back of the net.
While the assistant referee had raised the flag signaling a foul and ruling out the goal, a further consultation from the referee allowed the goal to stand. The goal sparked Chiefs to life, and they sealed it when Mfundo Vilakazi made a solo run before scoring the third.
Ismael Toure had put Chiefs ahead in the 17th minute but the Stellies levelled matters when forward Andre de Jong, who had just come on, glanced a header past goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma.
Asked about Mmodi’s goal, Nabi told reporters after the game as quoted by idiskitimes: “It’s true that everyone is very happy, the supporters all across South Africa,” he said on VAR.
“But we need to think like a big club, this was a test and we need to concentrate on the next test to go all the way. It was disappointing [to concede], but we knew that we were playing a very strong and tough team.
“Even after conceding the goal we kept believing that can come back and we were prepared for extra-time.That’s why we brought in Shabalala, Vilakazi because we were planning for extra-time, planning to give us that extra strength.”
The win enabled Chiefs to join Orlando Pirates in the last eight. Pirates qualified following a 5-4 penalty win against SuperSport United after a 2-2 draw.
