Kaizer Chiefs joined Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates as winners on Saturday in the Round of 16 stage of the Nedbank Cup, defeating Chippa United by a 3-0 score to advance to the final eight.
A 13th minute strike from Gaston Sirino confirmed a strong start for AmaKhosi. A rapid buildup down the right flank set up Reeve Frosler for an open crossing opportunity and the right back picked out Sirino for a perfect finish into the upper corner past Chippa United keeper Stanley Nwabali.
Chiefs keeper Bruce Bvuma was called into action once close to halftime with a strong tip over the bar from Giovanni Philander's long distance effort but Chiefs comfortably held their lead until putting the match away in the final twenty minutes.
A chaotic scene at the edge of the penalty area saw Nwabali commit a foul in the box and Inacio Miguel dispatched a penalty kick to double the lead in the 77th minute. Pule Mmodi finished the scoring late on for Chiefs who have now won two matches in a row.
Earlier in the day, Orlando Pirates and Marumo Gallants booked their tickets to the quarterfinals to join SuperSport United, Stellenbosch FC and second tier league leaders Durban City. Mamelodi Sundowns will host lower division side Mpheni Home Defenders on Sunday (13:00 GMT) to complete the weekend's slate of cup matches.
Mystery still surrounds a Round of 32 tie that is yet to be decided between Royal AM, who continue to battle financial issues, and lower tier club Milford FC. The Premier Soccer League issued a statement earlier this week stating that the tie is postponed until further notice. Sekhukhune United await whoever advances from the delayed match.
