Kwanele Kopo has resigned as Chippa United head coach with the trigger-happy South African side saying he is exiting because his contract expires today.
“Chippa United confirms that coach Kwanele Kopo is stepping down as head coach as his contract officially comes to an end at midnight tonight,” a statement from the Port Elizabeth-based club reads.
“Coach Kopo joined the club in January 2024 on a one-year contract and played a pivotal role in the team's journey this past year. Despite being offered a contract renewal six months ago, coach Kopo has opted not to extend his tenure with the club citing a desire to return to Johannesburg to focus on his family and family priorities.”
The Chilli Boys have since announced that assistant coach Thabo September, a former SuperSport United defender, is now the new head coach and will be assisted by Mabhuti Khanyeza who resigned as Golden Arrows co-coach a fortnight ago.
Kopo has resigned two days after presiding over a 1-0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs in a league game. In a post-match interview, Kopo described his team’s performance on Sunday as the worst this campaign.
“It is the worst I have seen of us this entire season. We couldn’t come out of the back in the build-up and I don’t think it was to do with the press but because we took the wrong positions in the midfield, we also tried to create a block of four. As much as Chiefs were close to our box, they didn’t have many chances. The real shot is the one that ended up with the goal,” he said.
Kopo leaves Chippa United in ninth place, 16 points behind leaders and holders Mamelodi Sundowns.
