The Federal Government of Nigeria has called for a thorough investigation into the mysterious death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal, who passed away in Uganda under unclear circumstances.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), expressed deep concern over the incident, urging Ugandan authorities to ensure a transparent inquiry.
She confirmed that the Nigerian Embassy in Uganda has requested a full autopsy and comprehensive investigation. “This is both pathetic and suspicious. We demand a transparent and thorough investigation—no cover-ups.
This is deeply saddening,” Dabiri-Erewa stated in a release signed by Abdur-Rahman Baligun, NIDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols. Mystery Surrounding Lawal’s Death According to Ugandan authorities, Kajjansi Police Division is leading the investigation into Lawal’s death, which occurred on the morning of February 24, 2025.
The Vipers SC footballer was reported to have fallen from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade under unclear circumstances. A woman identified as Naima, who was reportedly with Lawal at the time, claimed that she left him in their room preparing tea and went to a nearby game center within the mall.
Moments later, at around 8:00 AM, Lawal allegedly fell from the balcony. He was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Ongoing Investigations Authorities have since recovered Lawal’s personal belongings, including two smartphones, a pair of open shoes, headsets, a training kit, and chargers.
Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and conducting interrogations to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death. Lawal’s tragic passing has raised serious concerns, with the Nigerian government vowing to follow up on the case to ensure justice is served.
