Nigerian forward Victor Boniface scored a crucial extra time goal to send Bayer Leverkusen to the DFB Pokal semi-final. The 24-year-old was a second half substitute as Die Werkself beat FC Köln 3-2 to advance into the last four.
Boniface struck in the 98th minute after meeting a perfect cross from Alejandro Grimaldo. Köln took a two-goal lead but Xabi Alonso’s team rallied back from behind to book a place in the semis.
It is Boniface’s first cup goal of the season. He was very close to joining Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr but the move collapsed after Nassr turned their attention towards Colombian Jhon Duran. Boniface has now scored in back-to-back games for the reigning Bundesliga champions. He has so far bagged seven league goals
Leverkusen are holders of the DFB Pokal and they hope to retain their title this season.
