Assistant coach of the home based Super Eagles, Fidelis Ilechukwu, has revealed plans to make additions to the existing squad for the 2024 Championship for African Nations Tournament next year.

The squad is currently on a short break following their successful qualification for the competition where they eliminated sworn rivals, Ghana.

Nigeria kicked out the Black Galaxies after a 3-1 aggregate win over two legs - a goalless draw in Ghana on December 22 and a 3-1 win in Uyo six days later.

According to Illechukwu, plans are in place for the squad to assemble for training ahead of the tournament in February 2025.

The head coach of Enugu Rangers told Brila.net that the technical team led by Augustine Eguavoen will explore ways to strengthen the squad before the tournament.

“Eguavoen is still in charge of the job, we plan on having a meeting to look into the area we have to strengthen the team, maybe bring in one or two strikers,” Ilechukwu explained.

“I can’t give an exact date yet, but it will be soon—possibly within the next ten days, certainly before the 10th of this month,” he added.

Nigeria’s return to the CHAN tournament marks a six-year absence from the competition. Their best performance came in 2018 when they finished as runners-up.

The 2024 CHAN tournament will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, with matches scheduled to take place from February 1 to 28.
