Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical director Augustine Eguavoen addressed questions about the head coaching position of the Nigeria national team with important 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches on the horizon.
Eguavoen has handled the national team since fellow ex-international Finidi George resigned from the position after a poor run of games in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Eguavoen led the three time African champions to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Morocco later this year.
However, his status as head coach of the Super Eagles remains unclear heading into the resumption of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March. Eguavoen said on Kennis FM: "All hands must be on deck. We want to try and qualify for the World Cup”
"March is just around the corner. If we have to do something about the team, we need to do it quickly. That person should come in as soon as possible, settle down, so we can discuss, tweak things, exchange ideas, and plan the way forward."
"The earlier, the better. We should stay at home for the choice of head coach. The technical crew has to be expanded but the head coach should be homegrown because we understand the situation and feel the pulse of the people.”
Nigeria last appeared at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, missing out on the ticket to Qatar four years later after failing to beat Ghana in the final playoff round of regional qualifying.
