Former Nigerian international and NFF Technical Committee member, Victor Ikpeba has urged all and sundry to support new head coach, Eric Chelle.
Chelle was officially unveiled as the substantive Super Eagles head coach earlier this week with his appointment irking many Nigerians. The three time African champions are looking for two victories during the international break to help them revive their chances of securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Nigeria have a tall order in their next FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the citizenry were looking for the appointment of an experienced coach to steer them through that journey.
However, speaking on Nigeria based Brila FM, Ikpeba acknowledged the controversy surrounding Chelle’s appointment but urged Nigerians to look beyond his national team playing career and focus on his potential contributions as a coach.
“The appointment of a coach for the Super Eagles will always generate a lot of interest,” Ikpeba said. “This is one of the biggest countries in Africa, and that’s the passion that comes with the national team. “Even if we had appointed Pep Guardiola, there would still be complaints. If there are no arguments, there won’t be success.”
He added. “A decision has been made on a new coach by the NFF, and we have to support it. Eric Chelle is a young coach who will succeed with our support. “I am optimistic that with the backing of Nigerians, we will still qualify for the World Cup.”
